Can you believe “Soldier On” came out 10 years ago today? I just… How?!

Let me get nostalgic for a minute here. Back then, I’d lost yet another temp job as a teaching assistant and I’d spent the morning submitting CVs to various websites when I came across a blog post about publishing your own books on Amazon by an author I liked. And so after years of not touching a keyboard with such intentions and having never written anything beyond a kiss, I sat down and let the dirtiest fantasy I could think of pour out.

That’s what it felt like, it came out so quick and fast—puns always intended—that it felt meant to be. And ten years later, I still feel blessed when I fall into that flow state where it’s like the story is coming through me, tinged with my own drama and trauma and joy, but not exactly just mine… Like the universe or the characters or something was sending it my way and I’m painstakingly translating it into words for both me and you.

So… Soldier On:

Original cover (2015) of "Soldier On" & new cover as N.Y. Lysk.

What if a guy was captured by an enemy lord and the lord had him fucked by his minions to turn him into a woman for him?

This might have been based on that Roman emperor who married a young man after having him castrated since he looked so much like his dead wife… Or maybe all dirty minds come to the same place eventually.

What did I expect to happen when I published it?

It will probably not shock you that as a creative, I have a side to me that thinks coins in fountains will make wishes come true. I don’t let it out a lot, so like a very fluffy bunny trying to fit into a teacup, I decided the risk was low and figured I’d publish it and maybe make a bit of side cash.

I chose the name N.J. Lysk thinking it would just be an experiment and then I would go back to writing young adult fiction! Just to give you an idea, at 14 I came up with 7 different pseudonyms for my different writing personas (I even made emails for some of them!) and then never used them. So choosing N.J. Lysk on a bit of a whim because I liked the way it felt on my tongue was liberating. If 28-year-old me could see things now that I have published 38 books under as NJ and this is my full-time job...

Liberating is the word for the whole experience, really. N.J. Lysk wasn’t about to overthink was to call themselves, or whether anything was too taboo or violent or whatever. N.J. Lysk got things done. She is unfortunately also rather moral so she opted not to use KU at a time when it was very profitable for authors, but even with only a few sales, the taste of being read was too much to resist. Soon I began writing Omega for the Pack, which was of course another elaborate fantasy about a guy getting fucked into feminisation and impregnated by a group of hunky strangers.

To celebrate this month, from June 28 to July 28, you get 20% off your whole order (10 years for you and 10 years for me) with the code 10YEARSBABY on my shop.

Happy pride day and stay tuned for more surprises this month!
